Actions for Advancing the Algae Sector in the Baltic Sea Region
The current food system threatens the environment, particularly in the Baltic Sea, where nutrient leakage from agriculture has led to eutrophication, oxygen depletion, and reduced biodiversity. In this challenging environment, algae offer a sustainable and innovative solution. This project aims to develop and establish a Swedish, Baltic Sea–based algae industry. By working across the entire value chain – from cultivation and processing to product development, business models, and market introduction – the project seeks to contribute to sustainable food production, increased biodiversity, and resilient value chains.
The project strengthens collaboration between research and industry through pilot projects, testbeds, and targeted communication efforts. This will facilitate companies’ application of research results, enhance innovation capacity, and increase consumer interest in algae-based products. Within the framework of the project, innovative preservation methods will also be tested to improve sustainability, nutritional value, and the overall consumer experience.
